Matt at the Bear Butte Viewpoint in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness, August 2012

Matt Reeder moved from Illinois to Salem, Oregon at age 7 and soon after fell in love with the Majestic Mount Jefferson Region. He spent many summer and fall weekends hiking and camping near Opal Creek and Mount Jefferson and came to know the area very well. He moved back to Illinois with his parents when he was 16, but Matt returned eight years later to resume his love affair with Opal Creek and Mount Jefferson. 101 Hikes in the Majestic Mount Jefferson Region is the end result not just of three years of constant hiking, camping and research but a realization of a childhood dream.

Matt is the author of Off the Beaten Trail: Fifty fantastic unknown hikes in NW Oregon and SW Washington. He lives in old farmhouse in southeast Portland with his wife Wendy. When not on the trail or in the classroom, he spends his free time obsessing about music, following the Portland Trail Blazers and reading voraciously. You can usually identify Matt on the trail by his red St. Louis Cardinals hat, a visible sign of his lifelong love of the 2006 and 2011 World Series Champions.
